People say that being an RAF child has its disadvantages. I knew of none. I was born in Egypt in 1954 and my first school was in Limassol, Cyprus and in the late fifties and early sixties, an english person's experience of the Mediterranean was minimal. Only the sufficiently affluent could afford holidays in the South Of France or the Costa del Sol but the Eastman colour films of the l960's such as Darling, Fathom and That Riviera Touch gave the British cinema goer glimpses of what seemed almost like another world; a world of endless sunshine, seas of heavenly azure, powder blue skies and beaches speckled by people with golden brown skins. Spanish guitars and accordions beckoned and suddenly Blackpool and Brighton were not the only holiday resorts. By way of the cinema, the English tourist learned of the charm and allure of the Mediterranean. My first ever trip to Paris at fourteen years old recalled the unforgettable experience of travel abroad and my love affair with France began. This album, my first, is about the adventure and romance of foreign lands and perhaps even memories of those films of the 1960's thrown in - your first love and your best holiday. |
